Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church of Northern California Established in 1990 by the Bulgarian community in San Francisco Bay Area, Church “Saints Kiril and Metodi” is a member of the Bulgarian Diocese of Toledo, Orthodox Church in America.
Thousands of Bulgarians have place for worship and spirituality. Everyone is welcome to be part of the religious services and bible studies. The church is a place where we carry services like baptism, weddings, memorials, and many other events that are important in building strong continuity. |

The church is named after the brothers – monks Kiril (Cyril) and Metodi (Methodius).
Cyril (born Constantine, 826–869) and Methodius (815–885) were two brothers and Byzantine Christian theologians and missionaries. For their work evangelizing the Slavs, they are known as the "Apostles to the Slavs". They are credited with devising the Glagolitic alphabet, the first alphabet used to transcribe Old Church Slavonic. After their deaths, their pupils continued their missionary work among other Slavs. Both brothers are venerated in the Eastern Orthodox Church as saints with the title of "equal-to-apostles". In 1880, Pope Leo XIII introduced their feast into the calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. In 1980, Pope John Paul II declared them co-patron saints of Europe, together with Benedict of Nursia. |

Brief History about the Christianity in Bulgaria
Christianity was established in the First Bulgarian Empire under Boris I in the middle of the 9th century, although it has had its roots in the Balkans since the 1st century and the mission of Apostle Paul. The rise of the Bulgarian Empire made the Bulgarian Orthodox Church autocephalous in 919, becoming the first new Patriarchate to join the initial Pentarchy. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church is the oldest among the Slavic Orthodox churches and has considerably influenced the rest of the Slavic Orthodox world by means of its rich literary and cultural activity in the Middle Ages, as well as by the invention of the Cyrillic script in Bulgaria.
